Weekend Excerpt–Bonus Scene!

A traumatized young woman held hostage for years.
The rancher who comes to her rescue.
The crime boss who will kill them both if he finds them.

JENNY’S VOICE is Book 1 in the Redheads & Ranchers Series.
Sexy redheads and the ranchers they can’t resist.

Jenny Stone’s voice was silenced the horrific day ruthless crime boss Victor Sorkin executed her parents in cold blood and took her as his personal good luck charm. Now she’s his pet, at his mercy when he summons her to warm his bed. Or the beds of his more esteemed business associates.

When she sees her chance to escape, she takes it, hitching a ride with an unsuspecting cowboy, horse trainer Cole Caldwell. Cole’s stunned to find the terrified young redhead hiding in his horse trailer. She’s as skittish as some of the horses he works with, and she’s apparently mute. But the nurturer in him wants to shelter her, to protect her. He’ll do his best to ignore the attraction he feels, content to help her know she’s safe with him.

When Jenny first escaped, her only thought was to get away. But now she’s worried. She’s put Cole in unspeakable danger. Should she leave before Victor finds them? Could it already be too late?

If you like your romance filled with hot cowboys, suspense, and happily-ever-afters, you’ll love JENNY’S VOICE.

Here’s a special bonus scene from JENNY’S VOICE.

What am I going to do?

The question hasn’t stopped swirling through my head for the last few hours.  Not since I arrived back at the ranch with my new client’s horse and found her hiding in my trailer.

Jenny.

At least that’s what she tells me her name is.  Maybe tells isn’t the right word.  Because apparently, Jenny doesn’t speak.

She won’t write, either.  I found that out quickly enough when I tried to get her to jot down her name on a notepad I found in the kitchen drawer.

Somebody has scared the utter shit out of this girl, that much is clear enough.  Maybe the same asshole who gave her the black eye and the busted lip. The one I’ll kill if I ever get the chance.  I may be out of the Marines now, but I know how to handle myself.

Hell, I undoubtedly scared the shit out of her when I snatched her up off the floor of the trailer.  All covered up in my old barn jacket like she was, I couldn’t tell who’d stowed away in the empty stall beside Dahlia.  When I grabbed the front of the jacket and slammed her against the wall, it felt like lifting up a bag of nothing.

I don’t think I’ll ever forget my first glimpse of her face, with her left eye all purple and swelled shut, her lips battered and split.  Her good eye was the clearest green I’ve ever seen, and she stared at me with a terror that pierced my soul.

She was shaking like a leaf, but whether it was from the cold or from fear, I couldn’t say.  Her legs and feet were bare, and I had to wonder if she wore anything at all under my old jacket.

I didn’t even hesitate.  I scooped her up and carried her to the cab of the truck where I put the heat on blast.  At least she could warm up a bit while I got Dahlia sorted out in the barn.

It gave me a little time to think, too.  How did this girl get in my trailer? And when?  I only made two stops. Once to pick up the horse, and once to grab lunch at the truck stop.

That has to be it.  The truck stop. She ran away from whoever was hurting her.  That’s the only thing that makes sense.

With Dahlia squared away, I drove us to the house.  Blue greeted us at the door, and he took to the girl right away.  She seemed to like him, too, so that’s a good thing, I figure.

When she slid the hood down, I was surprised to see that her hair was long and red.  In the light of the kitchen, her bruises were more obvious, too. I didn’t want her to feel self-conscious about it, so I tried to keep things light.  After a while, it became clear that she doesn’t talk. It was a hell of a realization.

Two thoughts hit me at once: one, that makes things more complicated communication-wise, and two, what the hell happens to a girl that takes away her ability to speak?  I’ve seen combat veterans who have been through hell on earth, but they could all speak.

When I offered her the chance to take a hot shower while I heated up some leftover beef stew, she jumped at it.  She went upstairs with me and waited with Blue outside the hallway bathroom while I went to my room to try to find something for her to put on.  I grabbed some old sweats and my softest flannel shirt, along with a pair of grey wool socks.

I handed her the clothes, and it nearly broke my heart when she tried to smile and her lip split again.  She set the clothes on the bathroom counter and slid off my old jacket.

Underneath, she was indeed clothed, but only in the most basic sense of the word.  The dress she wore was a skimpy club dress made out of some shiny kind of material.  It left little to the imagination, and I deliberately looked away.

But when she turned to go into the bathroom, I caught something on the back of her shoulder.  It was a raised circular mark about the size of a silver dollar. A second or two ticked by before my brain caught up.

Somebody has branded her.

Downstairs, I stirred the pot of stew and did some deep breathing exercises trying to tamp down the rage I felt.  Somebody motherfuckin’ branded that girl!

When she came back downstairs, she seemed pleased to be clean and warm.  I was shocked to see that she’d cut her hair. When I left her, it had hung all the way down her back.  Now, it just brushed her shoulders, and despite her battered face, she was a pretty girl.

Now that’s the kind of thought that can just go back where it came from.

Favoring her busted lip, she carefully devoured her bowl of stew like she hadn’t eaten in weeks.

When she’d finished,  I took her up to my sister’s old bedroom.  It’s nothing special. In a lot of ways, it’s kind of a time capsule to back when Beth was in high school, but she seemed to like it.  I said goodnight and went to close the door, but she wasn’t having it. Without words, she made it clear to me that she wanted the door left open.

I called Blue to come, but he’d already curled up on the rug beside the bed, so I figure that’s a good thing.  I think he senses her brokenness and has appointed himself to be her canine guardian.

Now, downstairs in my office, I swirl the bourbon in my glass and wonder what comes next.  When I mentioned calling the police, the stark terror in her good eye returned. So I guess that’s out.  For now. Maybe as I gain her trust…

I wonder where she came from and who hurt her.  I have a million questions.  But I guess the most immediately pressing was her name.

Standing there in the kitchen, dressed in an old pair of my sweats and a faded plaid flannel shirt that swallows her whole, she finally trusted me enough to trace the letters with her finger on the kitchen counter.

J-e-n-n-y.

It’s progress, right?  I suppose it is. But now what?

Weekend Excerpt–The Girl in the Guesthouse

They say desperate times call for desperate measures.
Charley Weatherly is about to realize that it’s true.

Life isn’t working out exactly the way Charley Weatherly imagined it might when she walked away from her steady paycheck as a copywriter to start her own business. It turns out that not everyone in town is knocking down the door of her tiny independent bookshop. She has lost money every quarter since she opened.

Now, with her grandmother in need of more care than Charley can provide, some difficult decisions have to be made. The rest of her 401k plus the proceeds from selling the business might keep Nana in Pacifico Manor for about a year. That would give Charley time to figure out her next move.

But when that money is irretrievably lost, Charley is faced with an impossible choice. Being a gestational surrogate for a couple who can’t have a baby on their own will bring in the kind of cash she needs. Can she really follow through? And has she finally met the right man at the wrong time?

Here’s a little (unedited) teaser from THE GIRL IN THE GUESTHOUSE.

Outside, Ben sat lost in thought. A glance down at the table showed that he’d taken his pencils and sketchbook out of his bag, but he had no recollection of having done so. His mind was still back on the redhead inside.

She’d appeared out of nowhere, just like the woman in his dreams, only this time, she’d turned around. He’d immediately found himself lost in her deep brown eyes. She’d seemed a bit surprised, but then he’d been staring right at her. How could he not? She was the girl he’d seen countless times, only now in the flesh.

Every once in a while, he risked a glance over his shoulder back into the coffee shop, as though she’d disappear like she always did in his dreams. But this was no dream. This was real life. And his last glance showed that she was on her way with a tray.

A new customer arrived at the door at the same time she did, holding open the door for her as she came out. “Thanks,” Ben heard her say. Then she was at his table.

“Your usual,” she said pleasantly. “Sorry it took so long. I’m new here.”

The huge blue mug she placed in front of him reeked of pumpkin and featured a mountain of whipped cream that doubled its size. Ben frowned at the drink and looked back up at the redhead. Then he glanced over his shoulder and saw Gina doubled over with laughter behind the counter.Smiling softly, he nodded at the latte. “I think they played a joke on you.”

Her red eyebrows were knit in confusion. “This isn’t your usual?”

“My usual is just plain black coffee.”

Plump pink lips pressed together tightly as she shot a look inside. “I’m sorry. I’ll take care of it right away.

”A wicked idea crept into his mind. “Thanks. Be sure and tell Gina that I’m highly allergic to pumpkin.”

The woman’s eyes widened with alarm. “Holy shit, I am so sorry!” She immediately snatched up the mug. “I’ll be right back with your coffee.”

Suppressing the urge to laugh, Ben watched her scurry back into the shop and gesture animatedly as she spoke to her co-workers. Gina’s face shifted from amusement to stark terror as she looked his way.

For his part, Ben shifted a judgmental eyebrow her way before turning around and laughing to himself. A moment later, the redhead came back out, this time with a regular-sized cup of coffee on her tray.

“I am so sorry about that,” she gushed. “My new friend in there apparently thought she was being hilarious. It’s all fun and games until someone gets rushed to the hospital with anaphylactic shock, right?”

“Confession…” Ben’s lips twisted sheepishly. “I’m not actually allergic to pumpkin. I’m just not a fan.”

The redhead crossed her arms and her lips formed a large O.

“But,” Ben hurriedly added, “we don’t have to tell Gina that, do we?”

After a beat, a huge smile spread across her face and she chuckled. “I love it! She’s in there feeling terrible. I think I’ll let her swing in the breeze for a while.”

Her smile outshone the sun that inched its way overhead, and Ben felt bathed in warmth. He reached out his right hand. “I’m Ben.”

Still smiling, she took his large hand in her own petite one. “I’m Charley. It’s nice to meet you, Ben.”

Weekend Excerpt–BROKEN HARTS

Two weddings.
One Valentine’s Day.
And hearts will be broken.

A wedding on Valentine’s Day? It’s beyond cliché.
But it’s what Ali Hart’s niece Shannon wants. So Ali will wear the pink tulle bridesmaid’s dress, carry the rose and eucalyptus bouquet down the aisle, and keep her opinion to herself.

Ali is back in New York to get ready for the wedding, but her older sister and brother seize on her visit as the perfect time for Ali to make arrangements for their elderly father, who can no longer independently care for himself.

A navigational error puts Ali on a collision course with destiny. Now what?

***
A wedding on Valentine’s Day? It’s perfect.
Unless you’re not positive that she’s the one for you.

In the dark recesses of his heart, Logan Pryce knows that Catherine von Hollen isn’t the love of his life. The daughter of his father’s business partner, they’ve known each other for years. She’s blonde, gorgeous, and everyone loves her. On paper, it’s perfect. On paper.

A chance encounter with a nameless redhead on a crowded subway platform causes Logan to question everything he thought his life was going to be. Will he stay with the safe bet, or will he take a chance on something more?

If you love your romance with a little heat and plenty of heart, you’re going to love Broken Harts!

Here’s a steamy little teaser from BROKEN HARTS.

In the still of pre-dawn, Logan gazed up at the ceiling of Ali’s bedroom and sighed contentedly. Her head rested on his shoulder as his right arm cradled her. His left arm curled beneath his head on the pillow.

At the sound of her steady breathing, he smiled. When he’d invited her to lunch, he’d had no thought of ending up in her bed.

He shifted his lips thoughtfully. Well, to say no thought wasn’t entirely accurate. He’d allowed the occasional notion or two to blossom into full-blown fantasy, fodder for a private jerk-off session in the shower here and there. And there had been a stray thought or three when she’d shucked her coat at the restaurant earlier in the day, that form-fitting sweater dress clinging to every curve most deliciously. His cock had certainly taken notice.

He allowed himself a silent whistle.

Still, he would never have broached the subject. Not on a day like today, with the drama of her father being lost. It would have felt manipulative, somehow.

But it had been Ali who had brought it up, Ali with that heated gleam in her soulful brown eyes, and he’d been helpless to respond in any other way than he had.

There on the sofa in the den, they had made out like two starving souls, each practically clawing at the other, lips desperately seeking and finding, until Logan thought he’d explode right there. With a knowing smile, Ali had stood up and taken his hand, leading him to her bedroom, where she shut and locked the door behind them.

In the privacy afforded in her room, Logan had shed all pretense of self-control, hurriedly tugging first at her clothes and then his own until they stumbled toward the bed in a tangle of discarded garments. He scarcely waited for her to retrieve a condom from her bedside table before he plunged himself into her.

He closed his eyes and replayed the moment in his mind, relishing her gasp in his ear as he took her that first time. He hadn’t lasted long. He had known he wouldn’t. It had been a long time.

Catherine usually couldn’t be bothered, and when she acquiesced, he usually ended up feeling like he’d had to talk her into having sex with him. Which was why he hadn’t bothered in months, preferring his own hand and a vibrant fantasy life.

That first time on the bed had been followed up in the shower, where he and Ali had adjourned to clean up. The memory of her perky tits, water dripping from her luscious, imminently suckable nipples, her water-slick, shapely ass… Softly, he whistled again as his cock stiffened at the memory of taking her a second time against the marble wall of the shower.

The third time had been different, much slower and more sensual as he’d gradually brought her to climax twice, each time with Ali whimpering softly as she attempted to stifle her orgasm.

Note to self, he thought. Next time, we go to a hotel. The thought pleased him. He wanted to hear Ali’s pleasure unfettered by the presence of other people in the house.

Next time.

Pressing a light kiss to the top of her head, his thoughts strayed back to when they had first arrived at the Hart’s apartment. Taking care of Ali’s father had involved a flurry of activity. Logan had stayed in the background as much as possible, grateful when Mrs. Smith offered him warm, dry clothes in place of the damp, clammy ones he had worn in the snow. While changing in the hallway bathroom, he had taken the opportunity to call Catherine to apprise her of his missed flight.

She had taken it as he’d known she would, anger reducing her conversation to short, clipped responses. No doubt there would be hell to pay when he returned home.

Of another thing, there was no doubt, as well. Logan couldn’t marry Catherine. He didn’t love her; it was as simple as that.

Honoring their hair-brained pledge had been a bad idea from the get-go, but at that low point in his love life, it had seemed like a reasonable consolation.

A hell of a reason to get married, he chided himself.

Ali shifted slightly, sighing softly in her sleep. Logan gazed down at her and held her closely, appreciating the sense of warmth that flooded his soul.

No, he couldn’t marry Catherine. He didn’t love her. He loved Ali. He knew it as surely as he knew his own name. And if he were honest, he’d known it since he’d first seen her in the subway station. He was utterly in love with Ali Hart.

The only thing to do was to call off the engagement. Logan resolved to do it as soon as he got home.

Weekend Excerpt–FOR SPARROW

A platonic Dom/sub relationship?
It’s a damn odd arrangement.

When Jessi Crenshaw’s husband Graham dies unexpectedly, she’s devastated. He’s the only man she’s ever loved. Just eighteen when she met him, she’s been married to him for twenty-five years. Now she’s lost her friend, her lover…and her Dominant.

But as it turns out, Graham had an inkling that his health was in decline, and he tapped his friend and protégé in the Lifestyle, firefighter and paramedic Judd Farris, to be Jessi’s Dominant until she gets back on her feet.

Judd is determined to fulfill his promise to his friend. But it’s a damn odd arrangement—a platonic Dom/sub relationship. With her fiery auburn hair, sparkling green eyes, and audacious spirit, Jessi captured his attention the first time he ever saw her. At her husband’s funeral.

A man could go to hell for the things he’s been thinking. But they’ve drawn a line, and he’s going to stick to it.

Judd’s sexy good looks and his gentle confidence aren’t lost on Jessi. She’s torn between loyalty to the man she loved, and desire for the man increasingly in her fantasies. In the letter Graham left for her, he mentioned that she might find Judd attractive. But that’s simply ridiculous. He’s five years younger than she is. He couldn’t possibly be interested in her. Could he?

Judd’s a Dom without a sub, and Jessi’s a sub without a Dom. It’s perfect for the time being. Could it be that Graham had more in mind than merely a temporary solution?

And could it all end at the hands of a madman?

Read a teaser from 2018 Golden Flogger Award-Winner FOR SPARROW.

Jessi’s hands shook.  With her index finger she traced the writing on the front of the envelope.  She glanced out the back door to see Judd kick off his shoes and sit on the edge of the pool, sinking his feet in the water.  Buddy flopped down beside him and rolled over, wanting his tummy scratched, and Judd obliged.

She turned her attention back to the envelope.  Her irrational self told her that if she didn’t open it, somehow everything could go back to normal.  But curiosity won the moment, and she slid her thumb under the flap and carefully opened the letter.

My dearest Sparrow,

I’m so sorry I’m not there with you.  I can feel my heart beginning to wear out.  Please don’t be angry with me for not telling you, I know how you worry about things.  We’ve had a good life together.  I’ve told you before and I’m telling you again, you are the best thing that ever happened to me.  The fact that you are the mother of my children amazes the hell out of me.  What did I ever do to deserve such a terrific family?

Jessi reached up to wipe a silent tear from her cheek.  Self-consciously, she flicked her eyes out to the pool deck to find that Judd was watching her intently, and he flashed a sympathetic smile.  Sniffing, she read on.

It would be pointless, I suppose, to tell you not to mourn.  Just don’t do it too long.  And don’t you dare wear black.  God, I hate all that maudlin bullshit.  Now Sparrow, you and I know that you are a natural submissive.  I don’t want you to feel lost without a Dominant in your life.  I want you to find one, a true Gentleman who will cherish you in the way you deserve.  One who will nurture the sexy, sensual woman you truly are.  Don’t you go back to some kind of vanilla half-existence.  That would really piss me off.

Tears still streaming, she laughed because she could almost hear Graham’s voice.

If you have this letter, you’ve met Judd.  I’ve known him for several years now, and he’s a solid Dominant.  I’ve asked him to check in on you and to take care of some things around the house.  I’ve also asked him to help you out until you find a Dominant of your own.  Judd is willing to give you knee time, Sparrow, to help you settle your mind and find peace.  I don’t mean sex and kink.  He would be a sort of ‘emotional Dominant,’ just until you get back on your feet.

On the other hand, if you found yourself attracted to Judd, it would make me happy knowing that you’d be in good hands.  He’s a good man, Jessi, a gentle man and a Gentleman.  He would be a perfect sexual Dominant for you.  I worry thinking about the dangers out there, Sparrow.  You and Judd could make your own way.

Mortified, Jessi glanced out the back door.  Thankfully, Judd was staring out across the pool.  “I can’t believe you’re telling me these things,” she murmured to herself.

Anyway, I trust you, Sparrow.  You’re smart and strong, and I’m so proud of you.  Never forget that you are absolutely the love of my life.  I’m forever grateful to you for taking my hard, stuffy heart and helping me to be a better man than I ever dreamed about being.  Be sure the kids know how much I love them.  I love you, my Sparrow, with all my heart.  Live happy.  Find love and cherish it.

Your loving husband and Master, G.

Jessi was completely undone.  Sobbing, she folded her arms on the counter and rested her head on them.  She cried until she felt she had no tears left.  Moments passed and she raised her head.  It hurt and her eyes felt puffy.  With a glance at Judd and Buddy still sitting by the pool, she went into the powder room and splashed water on her face.

Taking a deep breath, she forced her feet out the back door and across the pool deck.  Judd smiled up at her kindly.  “How are you holding up?”

Jessi shrugged as she stepped out of her sandals and sat beside him, slipping her feet into the cool water.  They sat without speaking, each gently sliding feet through the water, watching the ripples cross the pool and return to them.  Judd moved his foot under her leg and raised her foot to the surface.  The fuchsia nail polish was chipped and peeling.

“How long since you had a pedicure, Jessi?” he asked gently.

She moved her foot away and looked at him sharply.  “What exactly did your letter say, Judd?”

He exhaled forcefully.  “Like I said, he was worried about you.  He said that you’re submissive and that you might need somebody in your life until you find your way.”  He glanced at her knowingly.  “When was the last time your mind was quiet, little one?”

A tear slid down Jessi’s cheek and she swiped at it roughly.  “So, you’re my appointed Dominant, is that it?” she asked testily.

“It’s not like that.”  Judd looked at her steadily.  “Graham and I were friends.  We talked about Dominance and submission for hours over the years.  He trusted me.  Trusted me with the one thing that meant the most to him in the world.”

He paused, gazing at her thoughtfully.  “He didn’t want you to run into the wrong kind of man while you’re looking to ease your mind, to fill that emptiness that I see in your eyes.”  Jessi stubbornly looked away and swiped at her cheek again.

“You know, it’s entirely up to you.  I’m going to complete the list of things around your house.  I promised him I would.  But whether you accept me as a surrogate Dominant?  Only you can decide that.”

He ran a frustrated hand through his hair.  “You miss knee time, I know you do,” he said softly.  “A chance to just let go of all the concerns that weigh you down.”  Jessi turned back to look at him, her expression softer.  “I’m not talking about kinky sex, tying you up and all that.  I’m offering you a chance to clear your mind of everything, let me carry your burdens for a while.”

“Why?  Why would you do that?”  Her voice was strained.

Judd shrugged.  “I’m Dominant.  It’s what I crave, to be needed, to take care of a submissive.”  He laughed lightly.  “I’m a Dominant without a submissive, and you’re a submissive without a Dominant.  For the time being, it works out well.”

He gazed at her steadily, kindness in his brown eyes.  “Just say the word.  Do you want knee time, little one?”

Another tear rolled down her cheek.  And she nodded.  “Yes,” she whispered.  “I want knee time.”

He smiled patiently.  “Yes, what, little one?”

“Yes, Master.”

Judd shook his head.  “I’m not your Master, little one.  Yes, Sir will do.”

Weekend Excerpt–CHASING ORDINARY

Because who doesn’t love a modern-day adult fairytale?

When Montana sculptor Petey Cavanaugh returned to New York City for an exhibit of her work, she didn’t plan on meeting the man of her dreams. Too bad she doesn’t realize that the handsome businessman is actually Europe’s most eligible prince.

Petey is everything Nik ever wanted. He’ll have to tell her the truth eventually. But for now, he’s enjoying his first-ever taste of ordinary. What will happen when she learns his true identity?

Here’s a snippet from CHASING ORDINARY.

Petey stared into the dressing room mirror.  “Oh, my God, I look like Alice Cooper on a three-day bender!”

“And we’re getting a picture of it, too,” Colin said, snapping a photo with his phone before she could protest.  “Because this is going to be a hell of a ‘before and after.’”

Colin clapped his hands loudly.  “Okay, people, we have an extreme makeover.  STAT.  Let’s see…”  He circled Petey, brow knit in concentration.  “First, we ditch this horrid dress.  Honey, I don’t know what you were thinking.”

“Unh, this was my friend Jules’ idea,” Petey snapped back.

“Well, what did you do to make her hate you because this thing is a nightmare.  Arms up,” he directed.

“This from a guy in orange pants,” Petey snarked, as she raised her arms.  Two female assistants gripped the hem of the dress and pulled it over her head.

“These are harvest rust, and they’re Prada.”

“Dude, they’re orange.”  Uncomfortably, she clutched her arms in front of herself in a vain attempt to cover her panties and bra.

Colin barked with laughter.  “I like you.  You’re feisty.”  He continued to peruse her closely.  “And you have great tits.”

He reached to cup one of her breasts and she batted his hand away.  “Hey!  Watch it!”

He just rolled his eyes.  “Honey, please!  Tits are not my thing, except the way they fill out couture.”

To one of the assistants, he snapped, “Elaine, go to the stash of Agent Provocateur and find something in a, what?  34D?”  Petey nodded mutely.

“And Zoe?  I’m seeing her in that pink Solace London.  The one with the mock turtleneck?”  The two women hurried off, presumably to find what they’d been sent to get.

Colin turned back to Petey.  “Get out of your wet undies and slip on a robe.  We’ll get you cleaned up, and then we’ll polish you until you sparkle.  Don’t worry about a thing.”  He winked at her and sent her on her way.

For the next twenty minutes, an entire team worked to put Petey back together.  Her hair was washed and her face was cleaned.  While someone worked on her makeup, another person gave her a pedicure, while a third did her nails.  Finally, her hair was blown out.

Colin returned to inspect their handiwork.  Nodding approvingly, he smiled at Petey.  “Okay red, in the dressing room, you’ll find new lingerie, a dress, and a pair of shoes.  Get dressed and come on out.”

Petey stepped into the dressing room and closed the door.  The mirror was covered with paper, and she’d only seen a maddeningly brief glimpse of herself in the makeup chair.  A plush chair held a cardboard box lined with tissue paper.  Inside were a pretty bra and panty set.  A pink dress hung on a hook on the wall, and she saw a shoe box on the floor.

Lifting the bra from the box, she admired the sheer burgundy fabric, embroidered with peach and deep pink flowers.  The tag still hanging from the garment announced its price–$215.  Petey gaped.  The matching panties turned out to be a thong, priced at $130.

Her most extravagant lingerie purchases had been a few bras from the Victoria’s Secret semi-annual sale.  It had taken over an hour to find something she liked, and she’d had a sneaking suspicion they’d made a stack of ugly bras just so they could discount them.

Shaking off her reservations, she dressed quickly, careful to pull the dress over her head without looking at the tag.  It seemed better not to know.

The shoebox held a pretty pair of mauve velvet ankle-strap stilettos.  She sank onto the chair and fastened them on her feet.  God, what I wouldn’t give for a mirror right now

Glancing at her watch, she saw that it was exactly twenty-five minutes since he’d left her to go upstairs.  He.  She had no idea of his name.  In all the chaos, she hadn’t thought to ask.

When she opened the dressing room door, a crowd was waiting, with Colin smack in the middle.  There was a collective gasp as he snapped a photo.  The group burst into applause, and Colin took a bow.  “That, ladies and ladies, is why they call me the ‘miracle worker’.

He took Petey by the hand.  “Come look,” he said.  He led her to a tri-fold mirror at the top of a small dais.  “Go ahead,” he nodded.

Petey carefully climbed the three steps to the top and stopped short.  Gazing back at her was the most beautiful self ever to greet her from a mirror.  Her long red hair was blown out silky and smooth, her makeup, including false eyelashes, expertly applied.  The pastel pink dress fit her like it was made for her, the mock turtle collar hugging her neck, leaving her shoulders and arms bare.  The clingy knit hugged her curves, and the hem hit just below her knees.  The color complimented her hair and skin flawlessly.

Colin stepped up behind her.  “Naturally, the dress is meant to be shorter.  But because you’re such a shorty, it hangs longer on you.  If we had the time, I’d have it taken up.”

Petey turned to him, eyes shining.  “Thank you so much.  I can’t possibly afford these things.  I’ll take them to the one-hour cleaner first thing tomorrow and return them.”

The man gave a friendly chuckle.  “Don’t worry about it, sweetie.”

“Hello?  Is she ready?” a male voice called.

Petey turned around.  Her rescuer had returned.  For the first time, she noticed his British accent.  Their eyes met and she gasped lightly.  He was the most gorgeous man she’d ever seen.  His dark blond hair was neatly trimmed, a thin scruff of beard defining the contours of his chiseled square jaw.  Deep blue eyes gazed back at her, wide with apparent surprise.

Certainly, she’d looked different when last he’d seen her.  As had he, to be honest.  He was now dry, his hair neatly back in place.  While the suit he’d worn earlier had been blue, the current one was a deep charcoal.

They stared across the room for what felt like an eternity.  Finally, she broke the ice.  “Hi.”

“Hello,” he replied softly.  “Are you ready?”

Petey looked to Colin, then back at him.  “Yes, I think so.”

“Before I send you back out into the monsoon, I’m putting a coat on you.  No more getting drenched.”  An assistant appeared with a trench coat in a black and white chevron pattern.  Colin helped her into it.

She threw her arms around him.  “Thank you!  Thank you for everything.”

“My pleasure, red.  You come back and see me anytime.  I mean that.”  He kissed both her cheeks.  “Have fun.”

She headed to the doorway where he waited.  He called across to Colin.  “Thank you.  You’re a lifesaver.”

Colin laughed and waved.  As the pair left, he shook his head.

“Well, kids, I think we just witnessed history.”

Weekend Excerpt–Just One Night

Hot Caribbean days…Even hotter nights!

Are you ready for summer? Long, hot, lazy days. Vacations to a tropical paradise.
What if you could go on holiday without ever leaving home?

JUST ONE NIGHT is my naughty little summer novella. It’s the ultimate beach read, but you can read it anywhere.

Teacher Katie Parker is on her annual Girls’ Only summer holiday with her best friends from high school. This year, they’re cruising the Caribbean in style. But Katie is on a mission. Determined to forget about her latest romantic disaster, she’s looking for a hot guy for a night of passion with a nameless stranger.

Mac Coleman, cruising to Mexico for his brother’s wedding, is only too happy to go along with her plan. But now, can Mac convince Katie that what they’ve found together is worth more than just one night?

Here’s a teaser from JUST ONE NIGHT.

By the time Mac made it to the door of the dining room, the redhead had disappeared.  He glanced to his left and then to his right, trying to guess her more likely route.  The woman at the photo checkout cleared her throat discreetly and he looked in her direction.  She nodded meaningfully to her right and smiled.
He grinned at her wholeheartedly.  “Thanks!” he proffered as he hurried off in the direction the clerk had indicated.  Mac made his way through the door that opened onto the deck and he saw her leaning against the railing, looking out over the dark water.  Her skirt ruffled lightly in the breeze and the full moon overhead gave her hair a fire-like glow.
Ignoring the slight case of nerves he felt, he approached the railing, stopping by her left elbow.  “Hey, you,” he said casually.
She startled slightly, whipping her head to her left, eyes wide.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.  I just saw you standing here and I thought I’d say hello.”  He held his hands in front of himself in surrender, pasting on what he hoped was a charming smile.
The redhead continued to stare at him wordlessly.  “I don’t mean to bother you.  I can go if you’d like.”
She shook her head.  “No, I don’t want you to go.  I was just surprised, that’s all.”
Mac smiled gratefully.  “Well, it’s a beautiful night.  And dinner was fantastic.  I don’t know about you, but I had the lobster and it was amazing.”
She smiled back.  “I had the mahi and it was delicious.”
They stood awkwardly for a moment.  “Listen, would you like to get a drink or something?” Mac offered.
She looked out at the water, then back at him, nodding.  “I’d like that a lot.”
His grin was genuine.  “Good.  Great.  Let’s go find a drink.”

***

The pair parked themselves at a tiny table at the edge of the piano bar, the first place they’d come to in their search for a cocktail.  Katie watched him as he approached the bar and ordered for them.  She couldn’t get over how handsome he was, how he’d come outside looking for her.  This was exactly what she needed to take her mind off of her man problems back home.
She smiled up at him as he returned to their table carrying a margarita for her and a Scotch for himself.  “Cheers,” he said, raising his glass to hers.
“Cheers,” she murmured in return, and she sipped gratefully, counting on the liquid courage her glass offered.
“You know, we’ve gone about this all backwards.”  He rested his drink on the table and offered his right hand.  “My name is—“
“No!  No names,” Katie quickly interrupted.
Mac blinked in surprise.  “No names.  Why no names?”
“Just…because,” she stammered.  “No names, no personal information, we’ll just…keep it casual.”
“Keep it casual.”  Mac frowned.  “Okay.”  He gave her a curious look.  “Do you want me to leave?”
She shook her head, red curls swinging.  “No, I’d like you to stay.”
He gave a relieved smile.  “Good, because I’d like to stay.  So…no personal information.  Do you want to talk about work?”
     “Oh, hell no!”
“Um, how about that weather?  That’s some pretty great weather out there tonight.”
Katie laughed lightly.  “I don’t mean to be a pain.”
Mac smiled back.  “You’re not a pain, exactly.  I just have to figure out the rules.  And you’re here with three other women?”
“You could see that in the dining room.  Where you were staring,” Katie observed.
“You know that because you were staring back,” he countered.
“And you’re here with two other men.”
Mac nodded.  “My brothers.  Oops!  Was that personal?”
     “Now you’re making fun.”
He smiled ruefully.  “Maybe just a little bit.  This is kind of a bachelor party.  My kid brother is getting married.”
“A bachelor party?”  Katie laughed lightly.  “Shouldn’t you be getting back to the debauchery?”
Mac laughed.  “Not much debauchery with those two.  My older brother’s been married for years and Tommy’s head over heels for his fiancée.”  He glanced up at Katie.  “Oops!  More personal information.”
Katie sighed and sipped her drink.  “My friends and I get together for a week every summer.  We’ve known each other since high school.”
“There now, that wasn’t so hard, was it?”
Katie nodded firmly.  “We’re even, that’s all.”  She rested her forearm on the table and toyed with her glass.  Mac did the same, and as he did, his arm brushed against hers.  She made no effort to move away from him.  He intentionally rested his arm against hers, noting the electric charge he felt, wondering if she felt it, too.
Glancing up, he saw that she was watching him intently.  “So…you don’t want any personal information.  You don’t want to talk about work.  You don’t want me to leave.”
     Katie shook her head.
“Okay, well we’ve got that settled.  What do you want?”  He watched her expectantly.
She stared at her glass as she swirled the remainder of her margarita.  Her buzz from the dinner wine combined with the icy cocktail made her feel bold.  She looked back up at Mac.
“Do you really want to know what I want?  I want just one night.  Just one night of anonymous, no-holds-barred, red-hot, no-strings-attached sex.  That’s what I want.”  She fixed him with a challenging stare.
     “Whoa,” he breathed, eyes wide.
Katie looked down at her glass again.  “Too blunt?”
Mac leaned back in his chair, lips forming an O.  “That was blunt, all right, but I can respect that.  I’ve gotta ask, though.”  He sought out her eyes.  “Is there some guy at home waiting for you to come back?”
Katie shook her head.  “I’m not cheating on anybody.  You?”
He shook his head, too, and laughed humorlessly.  “What was it you said earlier?  Oh, hell no.”
She lightly stroked his arm as it rested on the table, delighting in the goose bumps that appeared there.  Her gaze traveled from there to his lap, which seemed to be taking an interest in the proceedings if the growing mound there was any indication.  She shifted her focus, sliding her gaze up his torso to those lips she’d noticed earlier.  God, I just want to suck on that lower lip.
She met his eyes again, saw the fire there, and knew it matched her own.  “So what do you say?”
“I say, have another margarita.  I just need to run to the little shop and pick up some…  Well, I didn’t actually expect that I’d need…”  He smiled apologetically.
Her voice was soft.  “I’ll wait right here.”
He took her hand and gently brushed his lips across her knuckles, gave her a wink, and left the bar.

Weekend Excerpt–Rannigan’s Redemption Book 1

“… The journey of Michael and Maggie will carry you through a gripping narrative of suspense and enticement. The world of defense law surfaces as dark and decadent, driving the main characters to the fringes of heightened intensity. The character motivations are easy to understand, but as the story unravels, highly charged emotions plunge the characters into uncharted territories…” –5-Star Amazon Review

Rannigan’s Redemption is a three-novel epic contemporary steamy law drama. It’s the story of the complicated relationship between slick New York attorney Michael Rannigan and Maggie Flynn, the smart redhead he hired straight out of law school to join his highly specialized 50th-floor practice.

The two are attracted to each other from the beginning, but Maggie realized her crush on Michael is all but hopeless. He prefers shallow liasons to relationships, and she’s too smart to settle for that. Still…

Here’s a teaser from RESISTING RISK, Book 1 of Rannigan’s Redemption.

Michael and Maggie applauded with the rest of the guests following the finale of the fireworks display before returning to the table to collect Ben.  She shivered a bit as they walked.

“Are you cold?” Michael asked, running a hand down her bare arm.  “You are!”  When they reached the table he removed his suit coat from the back of the chair where he’d left it and draped it over her shoulders.  “Here, that should be better.”

Maggie pulled the coat around herself and as she did, his scent enveloped her.  “Thanks!  I didn’t realize how chilly it had gotten.”

Ben was conscious and blinking in confusion.  “Holy God, I thought we were being invaded,” he said.  “Where is everybody?”

Maggie laughed.  “Yes, we were invaded by aliens and they beamed up everyone except us.  Come on, it’s time to go.  We’ve dodged a bullet.  Michael has kindly offered for us to ride back to the city with him rather than taking the train.”

Ben cocked his head and looked adoringly at Michael.  “Somehow I knew you were my knight in shining armor.  What, more wine?  Don’t mind if I do,” he cooed, downing a half-full glass that was in front of him.

“Laying it on a little thick there, chief,” Maggie cautioned quietly, but Michael just laughed.

“Enjoy some more wine for a few minutes, I’ll call my driver to come to the front,” he said.  He completed his call and poured more wine for himself and Maggie.

They sat chatting about the fireworks and the music, leaving out their time on the dance floor.  Maggie wasn’t sure how she felt about it.  Being in Michael’s arms had been glorious.  Wearing his coat, surrounded by his seductive scent, the memory of his voice in her ear…  She furtively glanced at him, desire causing her pulse to pound.   She knew that she wanted him.  She also knew that she was a little tipsy and that she might not be making the best decisions.

“What is your cologne?” she blurted out.  Case in point of reckless decisions, she thought.

He grinned in amusement.  “It’s Bleu de Chanel.”

“It’s heavenly,” she said before she could stop herself.  “It’s just that, well, your jacket smells like you, which is good, really.  I mean it’s very nice.”

“You’re drunk, Mags,” he observed quietly.

She made a valiant attempt to look at him squarely.  “Maybe just a tiny little bit.”

Michael checked his phone.  “The car’s out front.  Are we ready?”  Between the two of them, they managed to get Ben to his feet and across the expanse of lawn to the driveway where a medium sized stretch limousine waited, driver holding open the back door for them.

Wide-eyed, Maggie looked around Ben to Michael.  For his part, Michael looked a little embarrassed.  “Jana likes to ride in a limo,” he shrugged.

Ben had fallen asleep again and together they maneuvered him into the car, laying him gently onto the black leather couch that ran down the driver’s side of the passenger compartment before they settled back into the plush leather seat at the rear of the car.

“Traffic is heavier than usual, Mr. Rannigan,” the driver told him.  “The drive may take a couple of hours.”

“Thank you, Mason.  And thanks for taking care of Ms. Hansen.”

“Of course, Mr. Rannigan.  Happy to help,” the man replied before closing the door.

Michael turned to Maggie as the car began moving away from the house.  “Hope you don’t mind a bit of a drive.  I hadn’t counted on traffic.”

“Please!” Maggie said.  “This beats the hell out of public transportation.  And traffic or no, we’ll still get back before we would have on the train.  Thank you for the ride.”

He smiled.  “My pleasure,” he said.  And meant it, he was mildly surprised to realize.  Impeccable manners had been instilled in him by the aunt with whom he’d lived after his mother had died.  At the time, he’d resented it, but they had served him well.  On the other hand, he often found himself mouthing words he didn’t mean.  Not this time, he thought to himself.

“Can I offer you a drink?” he asked, motioning to the bar that was opposite the couch on which Ben lay snoring.  Loudly.

“There’s bourbon and pink champagne.”  Maggie frowned quizzically.  “Pink champagne is Jana’s favorite,” he elaborated somewhat apologetically.

“I’ll take bourbon if it’s all the same to you,” Maggie responded, trying not to smirk and hoping that she was successful.  Michael turned over two glasses and began to carefully pour bourbon from a crystal decanter.

“Boy, renting a stretch limo, stocking it with pink champagne,” she muttered to herself.  “She must be some kind of lay.”  Michael glanced at her, shock registering on his face.  “Shit, was that out loud?” she asked.

“It was,” he answered, handing her a glass of bourbon as he settled back into the seat.  “And truthfully, she’s not all that.”

It was Maggie’s turn to look shocked.  Michael gave her a wry smile and clinked his glass to hers.  “To nights that turn out differently from the way you expected.”

They sipped their bourbon wordlessly, occupied with their own thoughts for a few miles.

“I know it’s none of my business,” Maggie began.

“Those words are always followed by a ‘but’,” Michael interjected, shaking his head.

“BUT,” Maggie continued, “I don’t know how you do that.”

“Do what?”

“How do you sleep with someone that you don’t even like?  I could tell from the moment we sat at the table that you didn’t like that girl.”

“Okay, I don’t want to have in-depth conversations with Jana, but did you see her?  Like I said before, it was just the wrong event for her.  She’s great at Nets games, music awards, things like that.”

“I just couldn’t sleep with someone that I wasn’t attracted to intellectually, that’s all I’m saying.”

“Is that what’s wrong with Dan?” he probed, happy to be talking about someone besides Jana.

“He’s a nice guy.  He’s smart and articulate, and not bad looking,” Maggie conceded.  “I just don’t feel that…spark, that’s all.  If I went out with him it wouldn’t be genuine.”

“You’re picky,” Michael concluded, shaking his head.

“I deserve to be,” she said quietly.  “You do too.”

They passed another few miles in silence.

“You know,” Maggie said, “I hear Disney’s coming out with a new princess movie soon.  And you could take her out for ice cream after.”  She gave Michael a mischievous look.

Michael gave a reluctant grin and his eyes sparkled in the lights of passing cars.  “You, Mary Margaret Flynn, are a smart ass.  It’s kind of endearing.”

She grinned at him.  “You’re welcome!” she teased.

He poured them both more bourbon.  “In a pain-in-the-ass sort of way.”

They both laughed.
*************************
“Mags,” she heard out of the shifting fog.  “We’re back in town.  I need you to tell us where to go.”

She opened her eyes and realized that she’d been sleeping with her head on Michael’s shoulder.   “Oh, God, I’m so sorry.”  She sat up abruptly.  “I didn’t realize…  I wish you’d awakened me.”

“No worries.  But we need to know exactly where to take Ben and where your place is.”

Maggie could see the driver watching her in the rear view mirror.  “My place.  Right.”  She gave the address and the driver thanked her, the partition whooshing back into place.  “Ben can sleep it off on my couch.  It won’t be the first time.”

The car came to a stop in front of Maggie’s apartment.  “Nice building, Mags.  Is the whole thing yours?”

She fairly snorted.  “In my dreams!  One day when I’m rich and famous, I’ll have my own brownstone.  For now I’m happy with a tiny part of the second floor.”  She smiled gratefully.  “Thanks again for the ride.  You are a life saver.”  She moved to open the door but the driver was there first.

“Let me help you get him inside,” Michael offered.  They both glanced at Ben, who hadn’t so much as shifted during the entire ride.

She looked back at Michael.  “Probably a good idea.  I won’t be able to get him up the stairs by myself.”  They succeeded in rousing Ben enough for him to put his arms around their shoulders and they moved him to the sidewalk.

Michael spoke quietly to the driver, who nodded before returning to the driver’s seat and slowly driving away.  Maggie looked at him questioningly.  “I told him to find a place to park.  I’ll call him after we get your date settled.”

They managed the stairs and Michael leaned Ben between himself and the wall as Maggie unlocked the door and let them into her apartment.  “Let’s just lay him on the couch,” she said, cocking her head in the direction of a large grey velvet sofa with navy blue accent pillows.

They worked together to get the unconscious and snoring Ben safely onto the couch, Michael studiously ignoring the way his jacket gapped open, inviting views of Maggie’s breasts as she leaned over to place a pillow under Ben’s head.

“Thank you so much, Michael,” she said as she removed his jacket and held it uncertainly.  “Can I offer you a beer or coffee or something?  Or do you need to go?”

“Coffee sounds good,” he answered.

Maggie smiled brightly as she gently placed his jacket over the back of a kitchen chair and set about making coffee.  Michael wandered around the living room area to the bay window and looked out over the street.  He turned back around to take in the view of the room.  It was small, of course, but nice in a quirky sort of way.  She’d left on a dim lamp near the window that gave enough light to the space without being intrusive.  “This is a nice place,” he commented.

She smiled at him from the kitchen counter.  “Thanks.  And again, I really appreciate your giving us a ride.”

“Mags, you’ve thanked me about a thousand times,” he said gently.

She blushed slightly.  “Well, I didn’t want to forget,” she said sheepishly.

He watched her as she worked in the kitchen, measuring out coffee into a French press, putting a kettle of water on the stove, little mundane domestic tasks.  His mind skipped to flashes of her from throughout the night.  Slowly it dawned on him what it was about Maggie that made him uncomfortable.

She’s real.  She has no hidden agenda.  She isn’t playing some game, she doesn’t want anything from me.  He sighed deeply. She’s the kind of girl who could make you forget your own rules.

Michael slowly crossed the room and stood by the kitchen counter.  “Can I help with something?”

“No, it’s all done.  We’re just waiting for the water to boil.”  She leaned back resting her hand on the counter.

He gently placed his hand on hers.  “You…are very dangerous,” he whispered, lifting her hand to his lips and kissing it softly, his deep brown eyes peering into hers.  Her brow furrowed, perplexed.

Gently, he tilted up her chin with his fingers and leaned down, meeting her lips with his own, lightly at first, and then more urgently.  He ran his other hand down the smooth fabric of the back of her dress coming to rest on her firm ass as he probed her mouth with his tongue, seeking hers.

Maggie responded, matching the heat of his kiss, reaching up, tangling her fingers in the hair behind his ear, giving herself over to his embrace.  Michael’s hand left her ass and smoothed its way back up to her side, her ribs, stopping just under her breast.  Reluctantly he pulled himself away.

Maggie breathlessly gazed up at him.  He smiled gently.  “We’re both a little drunk,” he said.  “Which is why I’d better go.”  Tenderly, he kissed her once again and walked out the door.

Weekend Excerpt–Merry Christmas!

This final weekend before Christmas, I’m sending you warm wishes for a wonderful holiday!

And I’m posting one last Christmas excerpt, but this one comes with a warning:
There are spoilers ahead, so if you haven’t read Rannigan’s Redemption from the beginning, you might want to stop right here.

This snippet comes from the third book of the Rannigan trilogy, RANSOMING REDEMPTION.

Afternoon blended into evening as dusk fell, and Maggie noticed that not only had no one left, they all looked as though they were settling in for a long stay, some even helping themselves to plates of leftovers.

“How are you feeling, Michael?” she asked, squatting beside him.  “Should I start shooing people out of here?”

“Don’t be silly, Mags,” he said, flashing his best Michael Rannigan grin.  “Everybody’s enjoying themselves.  This is the nicest Christmas I’ve had in a long time.”

She looked up at him and smiled, squeezing his hand.  “I’m really glad.”

As she made her way back to the kitchen, her phone buzzed in her pocket. Finally.  Bobby had called early in the morning and they’d chatted briefly, but they hadn’t had another chance to talk all day.

“Hey there, cher,” he greeted her.  “How’s my best girl?”

Maggie laughed into the phone.  “I’m better now.  I’ve missed you all day, but I know you were busy.  We’ve been busy here, too, come to that.”  She walked down the hallway for more privacy.

“Would you believe that everyone is still at Michael’s?” she whispered.  “Nobody has left yet.”

“No?”

“I asked Michael if I should start moving them along, but he seems happy to have them.”

Bobby laughed.  “It sounds like you throw a hell of a party.  Nobody wants to leave.”

“How was your day?  Did Savannah like her present?”  Maggie had sent Bobby with a portable artist’s kit to give the little girl.

“She just loved it.”  Maggie could hear the smile in his voice.  “That child had more stuff by the end of the morning than you would believe.”

Maggie laughed happily.  “Well, good.  I’m so glad.”  She sighed.  “I just wish you were here.”

“Me too, cher, believe me.”

“Do I need to let you go?” she asked.

“Yeah, I should probably get off the phone.”

“Okay, then,” she breathed.  “I love you.”

“I love you, too, Maggie.  I’ll see you soon.”

Maggie disconnected and made her way back down the hallway towards the living room which was as full of people as ever.  It seemed less than fair somehow that everyone had someone with them today.  Casey had John, Ben had Nate, Rance had Jason, hell, even Michael had Veronica   Whatever happened to the Orphans and Misfits?  She knew she was being petty and tried to shrug it off.

Across the room, Michael looked tired and he was using his oxygen again.  She wondered briefly whether she should just start moving people along in spite of what he’d said.  A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts.

“Hey Mags, could you get that?” Michael asked.

Sighing to herself, she crossed to the door, wondering who’d locked themselves out.  She didn’t notice that as she swung open the door the room fell silent.

“Merry Christmas, cher.”

Momentarily speechless, she froze for second before launching herself into Bobby’s arms.  He had to take a step back to keep from falling.

“Well, I’m glad to see you, too,” he laughed.

Through tears, she sputtered, “But…I mean, what…How did you…”

“Calm down,” he laughed as he carried her into the room.  “Merry Christmas, everybody.”  Bobby gently set Maggie down, and she gripped his hand in hers, unwilling to lose contact with him.

Casey brought a plate of food from the kitchen.  “Hi, I’m Casey.  I figured you were probably hungry.”

Bobby bestowed on her his best lop-sided grin.  “Nice to meet you, Casey.  I’m Bobby.  And thanks, I am pretty hungry.”  He took a seat on the end of the sectional, nodding at Michael.  “Merry Christmas, man.”

Michael smiled, his eyes crinkling.  “Merry Christmas, Beau.  Glad you could join us.”

As Bobby ate, Maggie introduced him to those he hadn’t met.  While everyone went back to their own conversations, she peppered him with questions.  “What happened?  Did you really call me from the hall?  Why did you come back tonight?  I thought you were staying in Louisiana for a couple more days.”

“I wanted to surprise you,” he grinned.

“Well…you did.  I’m so glad.”

Taking her hand, he kissed it gently.  “Let’s go get a breath of fresh air.”  He stood and held her hand, helping her up, and they let themselves out onto the terrace.  The cool air was a nice change from the warmth of the crowded apartment.  They walked to the railing and stood side by side looking out over the city with its sparkling lights and flurrying snow.

“It’s such a beautiful night,” Bobby murmured, and Maggie nodded, tucking her arm around his and resting her head on his shoulder.  “Such a beautiful lady.”

She looked up at him, and he kissed her lightly.  “When I think back on that day that your shoe broke,” he looked down and she giggled, “that seems like the luckiest day of my life.  I think of all the things that had to happen for us to meet at that moment.”  He gazed down at her.  “It’s like it was meant to be.”

He took both Maggie’s hands in his and faced her.  “I love you with all my heart.  I don’t ever want to know a day without you in my life.”  His eyes glittered with emotion and he slowly lowered himself to one knee.  Maggie’s jaw dropped, and her eyes widened.

“So I’m asking…Maggie, will you marry me?”

Maggie felt all the breath leave her body.  In a mad rush, memories from the last few years swirled through her mind, her infatuation with Michael, her engagement to Mike, her resolve to remain alone, that day she and Bobby had met.

She looked down into Bobby’s eyes and saw a twinge of anxiety and realized she hadn’t answered.  Unable to formulate the words, she nodded vigorously as tears filled her eyes.  Two things happened simultaneously.  Relief instantly flooded Bobby’s face, and raucous cheers went up from the crowd who’d pressed up against the living room windows to watch.

“You had me worried for a minute there, cher,” he laughed.  He reached into his pocket and removed a small midnight blue velvet box.  Opening it, he removed something and slid it onto Maggie’s left ring finger.  “You’ve made me the happiest man in the world.”  He stood and gazed down into her eyes before lifting her chin and kissing her passionately.  Again, their audience cheered loudly.

“Bobby, it’s absolutely beautiful,” Maggie said.  “I love it!”

He laughed.  “You can’t even see it.  I hadn’t counted on it being so dark out here.  Come on, let’s go on inside.”

Hand in hand, they went back inside the apartment to the hearty congratulations of their friends.  In the light of a lamp beside Michael, Maggie and Bobby looked at the ring.  The band of delicate platinum filigree held a huge emerald-cut diamond surrounded by dozens of smaller diamonds.

“Oh, Bobby,” she gasped.  “It’s unbelievably beautiful.  So delicate and vintage-looking.”  She turned and threw her arms around his neck.  “I love it!”

“Oh, for God’s sake, can we finally open the champagne?” Ben called out.  As champagne was poured and glasses were passed around, Maggie looked down at Michael who had a Cheshire grin on his face.

“This is the gift Bobby showed you?” she said, tilting the ring his way.  Realization dawned on her.  “And it wasn’t leftover champagne?  And this is why nobody would leave?”

“Everybody except you knew this was an engagement party, Mags,” he said quietly.

“Well, I guess it’s a good thing I said yes,” she said.

“Oh, like you would have said no,” Casey quipped, and everyone laughed.

“You’re so beautiful when you suffer,” I whispered, drenched the edge of the crop with her thick nectar and brought it to her nose. “If I owned you, I’d keep you tied and gagged until I decided you’d had too much.”
I made the final crop hit across her chest. That earned me another agonized scream. I could watch her like this all day but I didn’t want to damage her. Using the clover clamps was already pushing the safety boundaries.
I leaned forward to kiss the line between her breasts and slowly unscrewed the metal teeth around her nipples. When the tender buds were free of the cruel bite, I went to kiss her chest, lick her nipples and ease the hot pain. My fingers stroked her other breast and rubbed the sore spots, marked in red, rough lines. I sank my teeth into her nipple and got up to look at her face, enjoying the battle in those pretty eyes.
Kat’s altered emotional and mental state made me insatiable. I wanted more of her internal struggle. So I decided to push the boundaries one more time. When I pulled my lips away from her aching nipple, I took one of the candles from the bedside table and tipped it. A thin line of wax started dripping down her skin. Allie chose that moment to remove the ball gag so Kat’s cries resounded through the room, desperate yet so sensual.
“Please… please… it’s too much.”
Her clit was pounding. I kept running the line of wax across her body and Allie resumed the vibe torture. Kat sucked in her breath and squeezed her hands so hard she probably left marks all over her palms.
“Shhh…” I kissed her lips lightly. My tenderness contrasted to the pain provoked by the wax. “Relax, kitten. You’re really close and you were such a good girl. You can do it.”

She was still except for her trembling shoulders, staring at the floor, like a praying sinner and a guilty child. It broke my heart to see her that way and feel her anguish. The nausea threatened to make me dizzy but I pushed it away, walked closer to my girlfriend and started circling around her. Kat didn’t react to my presence. The only move she made was to lower her head. I could taste her fear as if it was black liquid sticking to my skin. It had been with her all along under the mask of makeup, charming smiles, and sass. She was finally stripped of her defenses.
I placed a hand on her shoulder. She raised her eyes to meet mine. The sight of Kat’s face was like a stab in my chest. Her cheeks were swollen and red after hours of crying. It was easy to see her eyes were bloodshot, even under the faint light.
“Thomas, I’m so sorry. I’m a horrible—”
I didn’t say anything, just put a finger on her lips. Earlier, I’d decided that it was best not to spare her. The sight of her made me change my mind. She was going through her own personal hell. It was much worse than anything even the greatest sadist could do to her. What Kat needed was kindness even if she felt she deserved a thousand whips.
After a few minutes of only looking at her eyes, my fingers ran down her cheek to wipe away a tear. I whispered in a soothing voice, “I’ll sit in that armchair. You’ll crawl to me on your hands and knees and put your head in my lap. Do you understand, Kat?”
She nodded. I smiled reassuringly and kissed her wet, chapped lips. When I walked away from her and sat down, my confidence slowly started coming back. Kat crawled slowly back to me, like a wounded, scared kitten, sniffling, trying to look strong. She laid her head on my knee and I rested my hand on her soft hair.
“Please, little one, just talk to me.”

“It’s time we went upstairs for our training session, pet.”
I tried to get to my feet but Thomas shook his head, tutted and put a hand on my shoulder. He pushed me back to a kneeling position and spoke with a wicked grin.
“No, Lina, I want you to get in the mindset of what it’s like to be a sub. Crawl for me, my pet and trust me to lead you.”
“This is demeaning.” I whimpered in weak protest.
He didn’t say a word and kept walking, tugging my leash carefully. I didn’t have much of a choice except to do as Thomas commanded. Crawling on the staircase after my self-proclaimed Master on a tight leash was one of the most surreal experiences I’d ever had. My pride wept at the debasement but the sensations were riveting. He was walking without any sign of hesitation in his steps, and every once in a while he muttered what a good pet I was. Those words made my long suffering body and mind feel elated, as if I were floating during the act of surrender.
The next day, my flesh would be sore and stretched but today I was getting further past my inhibitions than ever. I felt brave, adventurous and too aroused to analyze the situation. All I could think at the top of the staircase was how my nipples were as heavy and filled with blood as if he’d restrained them with clamps.
Thomas led me into the kitchen and let my leash drop to the floor as soon as we reached the big round table. The room was so different to the peaceful, sunlit place I remembered from our discussion last Saturday. He had turned the lights off and everything was clouded by the soft velvet embrace of twilight. The only sources of illumination were two tall candlesticks whose small flames cast shadows over my face.
I had been too shocked to notice any small details last week but at that moment, all my senses were heightened. The fragrance of aromatic wax, probably cinnamon, made me tingle with expectation of the surprises Thomas had prepared for me. I closed my eyes to let the anticipation fully sink in and take control of me. Thus, I failed to notice the other objects on the table and yelped in surprise at the familiar bite of the clamps on my already engorged nipples.
“I remember you loved them.” Thomas laughed at my panic and slapped my ass playfully when he’d finished adjusting the clamps on my breasts. “Up on your feet now, pet.” He handed me a hair tie once I opened my eyes. “For the next part, tie your hair as tightly as possible. It would be in the way for what I have in mind. Bend over the table. Place your hands palms down next to your head. Spread your legs as wide as you can. I need full access to your pussy.”
“How long do I have to wait?” I moaned while I was tying my hair in a messy bun with shaking hands. The pain in my heaving breasts was the final straw, pulling me into an almost hallucinating state of arousal. “Thomas… Sir… I can’t last. I need you so badly. I’m in so much pain. Please, spare me.”
“So do I, my pet.” He was hovering over me. He had taken off his pants and underwear and the tip of his throbbing cock nearly pressed against my ass cheek. Thomas was holding himself by the shaft and staring at me with intensity. “The week wasn’t easy for me either.”
My skin was burning brighter than the flames of the candles lighting up my exposed, dripping flesh. This time, he didn’t use any bondage on me save for the symbolic leash, but his steely willpower had me fully restrained. One look and an order with his calm voice and my body turned into a mess of pent-up lust.
A week of holding back added up as well.
“I’m scared,” I whispered, and in response, Thomas pressed my shoulder harder against the table.
“I know. Don’t move an inch. If you change your position even slightly, the next step would be to have you wear a chastity belt for the next week.” The firm dungeon dominant had returned. The seriousness of his threat took its toll on my feverish brain.
“Yes, Master. Just, please, hurry up. I’m dying,” I whispered in a small voice, without recognizing myself.

“You’re a good girl, Lina, but don’t try to dictate my pace.” Thomas leaned forward to nibble my earlobe. Then he stepped back and out of my sight. “Close your eyes.”
The inky darkness behind my eyelids didn’t do much to comfort my throbbing clit and nipples. Then the first drops of wax licked the skin of my back. Had I seen him taking the candlestick and tilting it to leave a trail of red drops, I’d have tensed with fear and expected the burning would be unbearable. Fire was one of those forces of nature that held both allure and terror for me. The thought of permanent scars and burning flesh were imprinted in my mind each time I stared at the tip of a flame, but the warmth and safety it exuded made me feel alive in spite of the silent horror.
When he spread the hot, small drops all over my shoulders, down the sensitive spots on my spine and the curve of my ass, I tingled with how fantastic it felt. Instead of white-hot agony, my body shuddered with delight at the warmth of the dripping candle. It triggered pleasure through my entire self, like a throbbing, erotic impulse. The warmth down my sweaty, exposed skin was short enough to make me tremble with stimulation. It melted in rivulets down my back before solidifying. I tried to stay as still as possible but when strong convulsions ran through me, I moaned out loud.
“Do you like it, little one?” he whispered and brushed his thumb across the back of my neck. I writhed under his touch when he kept dripping wax all over me. “You used to say candles were the worst of all romantic clichés.”
“It feels amazing. I thought… Shouldn’t it hurt?” My mind was split in two, as relaxed as if I were in a massage parlor, and right on the edge of insanity. His slow, comforting movements and the increasing heat of the flame were torturous, but I loved what he was doing to me. For a moment, I wished I never needed to come down from my heightened state of arousal, right at the door of agony. My flesh demanded a climax to unify all my waking sensations.

“Have you always been such a rebel?” Hopefully, she wouldn’t take my affectionate smile as condescending.
Lina frowned and tried to pull her hand away but I wouldn’t let her escape so easily. She didn’t protest when I tangled my fingers with hers.
“Are you trying to analyze me, Thomas? I thought this was meant to be a fun afternoon.”
“I want to understand you better, Lina. I don’t want you to be defensive around me or think I’m trying to humiliate you.” My voice was low, almost a whisper. It might have been a bad idea to talk about intimate matters in a public place but the moment was way too perfect. “You’ve always been intriguing to me, such a walking contradiction.”
“How so?”
“For starters, you’re an introvert who has chosen the role of leader.”
“What?” Lina pulled away from me, much to my regret. She raised her hands over her head and gazed at me with bewilderment and some fear. “What makes you think I’m an introvert? That is even more ridiculous than claiming I’m submissive.”
Damn, for such a highly intelligent woman she suffered from some delusions about herself.
“Don’t take it the wrong way, Lina. I don’t mean you’re an anti-social freak or even shy. That’s a common misconception, just like the assumption submissive women are weak puppets.”
This conversation had the potential to backfire but I wasn’t going to back down. Who knew when we’d have another chance for an honest conversation? I just had to pick my words carefully.
“I’m an introvert myself, not that that’s a surprise. You’re capable and you show an enviable confidence. You know how to inspire your employees. Your negotiation skills are remarkable and you play the part of a people person to perfection, but there comes a point when you simply need to have some time away, doesn’t there? To recharge your batteries, to get your strength back? What I’m trying to say is…” I smiled at her in reassurance. “I understand your need for a safe harbor and I often experience it myself. I admire you even more now because I know how much effort it takes.”

She shifted in place and spun her wrists in the tight bracelets to test their sturdiness rather than to set herself free. She trembled again and her skin rose into goosebumps under the warm glow of the table candles. Another lightning strike fell and made her lurch forward in the chains in shock.
I circled around the cube, moved behind her and pressed my body against hers, allowing her to feel my erection and my arms around her waist. The soft gasps of horror grew into louder sounds of pleasure when I pressed my lips to the side of her neck, fondled her breasts and squeezed her nipples. My clasp was as tender as possible when I left a line of wet kisses from her earlobe down to her collarbone.
She moaned and tossed her head back when I hooked my fingers into her wet cunt, grabbed the thick foxtail and pushed it deeper inside her. Her walls were soft and coated with silky wetness, a fragrance I could never mistake, even with the aromatic wax lingering in the air. She clenched her muscles tight around me when I picked up the speed of my fingers and gyrated the plug to ease her even more. Her hands clasped into fists and she barely balanced on the swinging chains.
Slick, profuse juices were gathering in my palm when I pulled out to give her pussy lips a loud slap. She let out the first real scream of pleasure for the night, parted her legs wider and raised her ass. The foxtail was brushing against the bulge in my pants while her naked body was dancing and her feminine crotch was grinding against my evasive fingers. That was the moment to tease her, never give her that deep, intimate touch. I let go of the fur I’d been clasping, spanked both her ass cheeks and let the warmth of the mild pain spread through her system.
She leaned her head back and rested it on my shoulder. She breathed heavily and stared up at the metal grid while her aroused clit was throbbing. I grabbed her ponytail in a firm, possessive way and forced her to bend further, to raise her bust and present herself to me as a gift, voluptuous, with hardened, pulsating nipples.
It was just my imagination but it felt like the elements outside were playing voyeur to our scene. Every time Lina screamed out with the teasing and warm-up spanking, new thunder shattered the air. The wind was a horny she-wolf provoked by my lover’s wild screams.

Lina picked up a bottle of white wine from the shelf and looked back at me.
“I’m not sure what you have planned but I could use a drink. You know, for relaxation. Would it be okay?”
I pulled her by the hips, kissed her and rubbed the back of her neck.
“I’ll make sure you’re relaxed enough without the extra lubrication. Still, it wouldn’t hurt. No more than half a glass per meal, and we’ll have coffee afterwards.”
She trembled when I leaned to whisper in her ear and bite it.
“You’re right about one thing, Lina. I do have plans and I want you sober, alert and dripping.”
Lina rolled her eyes, pushed me away with a light grin and left the bottle in the cart. She made sure to bend over more than necessary so her dress would cling to her hips.
“Same old. You love to boss me around and make me hot and bothered in public places.”
I smirked at her.
“Is that a complaint? We both know you love being teased into submission. Now, we’d better go if you’re done trying to pay me back with my own poison to earn a punishment later.”
After a little spicy argument at the checkout, I paid the bill and we headed out into the ice-cold morning. Lina gave me the directions to her address, and five minutes later we were standing on the wooden porch with our bags.
I looked around while she took the keys out of her purse. Her house was right on the coast, close enough to town. Still, the area had a sense of wildness to it. It opened onto a white sandy lot covered in marram grass, overgrown rocks with a view to the ocean. A small pathway led down to the beach itself. It must’ve been fantastic to be here in the high summer season, with nothing but blue sky and infinite ocean washing the sand below.
I’d have appreciated the austere beauty of the landscape more if it hadn’t been for the vicious winds blowing our way. Waves crashed against the shore with a threatening roar. The clouds gathering on the horizon were slowly spreading across the sky. Lightning flashed for a fraction of a second and distant thunder followed it.
Well, we’ll be stuck inside for a long time, I thought with a smirk.
Lina opened the sliding door just in time before the first raindrops fell on the porch.
“Bikini weather,” she mumbled as we brought the luggage into a sort of living and dining room combo.
“Oh, come on, it’s not that bad,” I said, carrying two of the grocery bags. “You know, it may seem strange but I’ve never been much of a beach lover. Indoor activities are much more fun.”
“You miss the finer things in life.” Lina laughed, took her coat off and hung it on a hook on the wall.
“What can I say?” I shrugged, approached her from behind and hugged her. “I’ve got all I need right here.”
She let out a happy sigh when my lips pressed to the side of her neck. I crossed my palms over her stomach and pulled her closer.
“This place is lovely and it suits you.”

The bare touch of his hands and the slowly growing intensity were electrical. He was studying the surface of my lips and was getting inside me with nothing but his sheer presence. The dungeon chill was fading and I grew more lustful with each small, tempting touch. If I tried to approach him and opened my mouth to beg he’d just place his finger on top of it to silence me. Thomas laid his left hand on my shoulder to keep me at the exact position.

His cat-like grace and the dance of his touch quickly turned into a stealth and aggression without a warning. I didn’t even have the time to cry out in protest when he grabbed me hard by the ponytail, spun me around without an effort and ground my aroused body against the stone wall. A soft mewl of despair came from my lips. Thomas moved his mouth to my ear and sank teeth in that delicate spot that always made me weak in the knees. He grabbed me by the wrists and crossed them at the small of my back before he pressed his strong body against mine. I found myself trapped between him and the hard, stone wall. Its iciness didn’t take away any of the liquid fire he provoked with his teasing and the sweetness of the denial.

“You know I can’t simply let you get away with it, don’t you, little one?” Thomas lowered his voice as he whispered in my ear. I shifted under him and tried to move my wrists. A sharp stinging slap elicited a cry out of me and forced me to stay in place. It was such a strong, confident smack. I bet my ass cheeks were already blushing in red. “Be still. I never gave you permission to move, did I?”

N-no, sir,I whispered weakly. It was so difficult to follow his orders when every word whispered in that sexy tone made me melt and wish to kneel.

“I’d say you were a good girl, but you have been very, very bad this morning, Lina. You must have forgotten what I’m doing with bad girls and it’s high time to remember.”

“What do you mean, sir?” I slipped into the role as if I was sliding my favorite silk stockings on. “A woman has to do what a woman has to do when her Dom hesitates to make the first move.”

His growling laughter, right at the nape of my neck, caused a row of ants to start marching all over my most sensitive zones. I breathed out and closed my eyes while he was brushing his lips across my skin.

“… and that sassy mouth of yours just earned you an even harsher punishment. You really don’t know what’s best for you, do you, Lina? You’re still begging for trouble, like the bad girl you are. You knew the rules. I warned you not to go to the dungeon unless I permit you. Did I ever tell you could mess with my locks?”

Lina?” I whispered in her ear and rubbed the nape of her neck. She looked up at me with hesitant, wet eyes. “Go to the bedroom and take off your clothes. Wash your face and take a shower if you want. Put on your collar and come to me downstairs.”

“Are you going to punish me because I was a bitch to you?” Her shoulders sagged. “Can we do it tomorrow or on Sunday? I feel unwell and I don’t think I can take it. Please.”

Relax, pet.” I kissed her and bit her bottom lip playfully. It was still tender from the way she’s been nibbling it earlier. “Yes, you’ve been a bitch but I won’t punish you for it… yet. Just trust me.”

That made her smile for the first time that evening.

“The old Thomas would have me bent over the kitchen counter and marked my ass with the largest and heaviest spatula he had.” She joked and pressed her face close to mine.

Oh, that guy?” I raised my eyebrow and squeezed her ass cheeks. “He was wrong about a lot of things. There are more effective ways to deal with your bitchiness… but Lina… you don’t have to act like a bitch to earn yourself a spanking. Kneeling at my feet and begging for it would be enough.”

When she withdrew from me and walked down the hall to our bedroom Lina looked much calmer. I shook my head at the thought.

Our bedroom.

Ours.

It was strange to think of anything in here as something different than my own.

Sharing space proved to be more difficult than planned.

I grabbed two beers out of the fridge. The thought of Kat flashed in my mind while I was walking down the stairs.

She was the girl who almost moved in with me.

Would it have been the same way if I had gotten together with her? She lived with me for a short time back. It was a different situation, though, and we always knew it was temporary.

That was it, I didn’t have much experience to make a comparison and Lina admitted all her previous attempts to live with someone ended up as a disaster.

We were both clueless.

She would probably not appear for a while so I sat back on the couch to finish the Skyrim game. It was difficult to focus but I did it just to keep my mind busy with something. I didn’t realize Lina was back in the room until I felt her on my lap.

The sight of her made my blood boil, being naked, a little wet from the shower, with perky pink nipples and a black collar around her neck. I pushed the lustful thoughts aside and made a gesture at her to climb on the couch. Lina curled next to me, still with her head on my knee and the silver chain of the leash in hand.

“Much better.” I said soothingly and ran a finger down the curve of her spine. “How do you feel now?”

“My head is no longer spinning. I don’t feel like I’d throw up so I must be well.” She chuckled and rubbed her cheek against my knee like a literal pet cat. “I can’t believe I told you…”

Goose prickles covered her spine while I traced it with hand in a soft, straight line. That simple action eased the knots in her shoulders and Lina was just about to start purring.

No.” I shook my head. “I’m glad you told me what was the problem. If I’m guilty of something I’d want to know what it is. You know it’s the first time I live with a woman so I want to do my best.”
